Speed Up Your Office Computers

Clients and potential clients often ask us how to speed up their computers.

In all honesty, there is not just one simple answer, let us show you just a few.

HDD

If you are using an HDD, you may often hear a noise of it whirring around.

HDD is based on a mechanical drive which can slow over time and wear.

An HDD drive works by using a little needle attaching to a rotating disc, very similar to a record player.

Over time an HDD drive will slow down by mechanical wear and by files being displaced (fragmented) on the drive.

Upgrading to an SSD is a great solution, to find out more talk to us.

CPU

The CPU in your machine will be a major factor when looking at the causes of the slowdown.

CPU technology has advanced a lot over the years,

but consider the Core 2 Duo that was often found in many laptops only retired in 2012.

We recommend either an i5, i7, i9 for Intel-based machines or one of the new Ryzen CPUs by AMD.

If you are a fan of Apple then the new M1 Macbook Pros with either M1, M1 Pro or M1 Max are excellent.

RAM

Computers will ship with an amount of RAM and this always varies.

RAM typically comes with 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and can often be shipped with 32GB, 64GB, or more.

The higher amount of RAM is rarer due to the increased cost that comes with it.

An interesting tech fact, we actually got to the moon on only 4KB RAM.

When considering how amazing that was there is 1024KB in 1MB of RAM and 1024MB in 1GB of RAM.

APPLICATIONS

When you purchase a new computer they often ship with software arranged by the Manufacturer.

This is often a deal they make to earn additional money, so when you purchase the machine the hope is you will use it.

Often this is considered Bloat but not always.

The reasons for the slowdown are often due to too much installed or applications setting themselves to startup automatically.

By configuring the computers properly this can be fixed.

Many of the reasons mentioned are typically what we handle for our clients.

When we are looking after our clients Managed IT Systems, we monitor and manage systems so they can easily be fixed.

Our email wasn’t performing very well so we asked Hamilton Systems to take a look & Carl proposed to migrate us to MS Exchange.

Carl was very helpful throughout & the migration went very well.

He was on hand to sort out any teething issues, taking calls early morning & into the night, to ensure we were up & running smoothly.

Would recommend for knowledge, attention to detail & great customer service.”
